Stars Can’t Prevail to Eliminate Avalanche by Allowing Three Goals in the Third in Game 5

A third team has fell at home with a chance to clinch a series in Game 5; this time it was the top seed in the Western Conference.

The Colorado Avalanche avoid elimination and defeated the Dallas Stars 5-3 at American Airlines Center. With the loss, the Stars must head to Denver for Game 6 at Ball Arena on Friday night at 9 p.m. CT.

The Rangers had a chance to eliminate the Hurricanes and Panthers had a chance to eliminate the Bruins at home in Game 5 and both failed. Tonight, the Stars failed to clinch their series against the Avalanche.

In the 12th game of the Playoffs, Joe Pavelski scored his first goal of the 2024 Playoffs to give the Stars a 1-0 lead for his 74th career Playoff goal. With 0.6 sconds remaining in the first period, Artturi Lehkonen scored a powerplay goal to tie the game at one.

At 11:39 of the second period, Miro Heiskanen scored a powerplay goal to give the Stars a 2-1 lead. Heiskanen’s goal tied him with Sergei Zubov and Craig Hartsburg for the most Playoff goals among defensemen in Stars history with 15.

Cale Makar would answer back for Colorado with a powerplay goal at 17:24 to tie the game at two before the second period ended.

Colorado opened the third period by scoring two goals in 3:16 to take a 4-2 lead. Logan Stankoven gave Stars fans hope by cutting the lead to 4-3 at 5:44 in the third period. With 3:10 remaining, Nathan MacKinnon scored to make it 5-3 and ice the game.

Tonight marked the first time since Game 6 of the 2023 Conference Finals where Jake Oettinger allowed in five or more goals. Oettinger made 22 saves in the loss. Alexander Georgiev made 24 saves in the win and Makar’s second goal of the game to make it 4-2 would be the game winning goal.
