Stars Can’t Prevail With Third Period Rally Against Blackhawks

In the fourth and final meeting this season against the Blackhawks, the Stars dug themselves in a hole and couldn’t get out of it.

The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 at United Center. With the loss, the Stars fell to 48-20-9 and had their winning streak snapped at eight.

Prior to the game, head coach Pete DeBoer wouldn’t play Tyler Seguin for rest and insert Mavrik Bourque into the lineup as he made his NHL debut.

In the second period, Chicago scored 3 goals against Scott Wedgewood in a 4:03 span. Connor Bedard scored the opening goal of the game on the powerplay. Andreas Anthanasiou scored his first of the season and Seth Jones scored following Bedard’s goal. Wedgewood made 14 saves in the loss.

Roope Hintz cut the Chicago lead to 3-1 heading into the second intermission. Trailing 3-1 with under 5 minutes to go in regulation, Jamie Benn scored his 20th of the season to make the game 3-2. Benn became the eighth Star this season to score 20 goals.

The Stars had a powerplay with under 4 minutes to go after Jason Dickinson tripped Miro Heiskanen, but the Stars couldn’t score.

For the Blackhawks (23-48-5), Petr Mrazek made 42 saves. Six different Blackhawks recorded an assist. Jones, Ryan Donato and Alex Vlasic had a +2 rating.

The Stars will conclude their back-to-back tomorrow night in one of the most important games of the season against the Avalanche with puck drop at 9 p.m. CT. Tomorrow is the final road game of the season for the Stars.

Heading into the final meeting against the Avalanche this season, the Stars are 0-2-1 against the Avalanche. In the first meeting in Denver on Feb. 27, the Stars allowed five unanswered goals after taking a 1-0 lead just 1 minute into the game. The Avalanche trail the Stars for the Central Division lead by 3 points as both teams have played 77 games.
