Random Stars Players on Playoff Teams: Alex Chiasson, 2014

After being drafted 38th overall by the Dallas Stars in 2009, Alex Chiasson waited until April 3, 2013, to make his NHL debut against the Anaheim Ducks.

Two nights later against the Ducks, Chiasson scored his first NHL goal. Two nights later, Chiasson recorded his first two-goal game of his career against the San Jose Sharks.

While playing in the 2012-13 lockout 48-game season, Chiasson recorded 7 points (6G, 1A) and played 7 games with recording 2 two-goal games.

In the 2013-14 season, Chiasson was tied for fourth on the Stars with Cody Eakin in points with 35 points (13G, 22A) playing 79 games. Chiasson did have the lowest +/- on the team with -21.

On March 10, 2014, the Stars hosted the Columbus Blue Jackets. Just over 6 minutes into the game, Stars forward Rich Peverly collapsed on the bench. Chiasson had an anxiety attack when Peverly collapsed.

The Stars made the Playoffs in 2014 for the first time since 2008 as the second Wild Card seed and faced the Ducks. The Stars were eliminated in six games after a 5-4 overtime loss in Game 6 at home. In the 2014 Playoffs, Chiasson played every game and recorded 2 points (1G, 1A) in the series. Like the regular season, Chiasson had the lowest +/- rating in the Playoffs with a -7.

In the Summer of 2014, Chiasson’s time in Dallas came to an end. The Stars made a blockbuster trade with the Ottawa Senators. Dallas sent Chiasson, prospects Nicholas Paul and Alex Guptill and a 2015 second-round pick to Ottawa for Spezza and prospect Ludwig Karlsson. Chiasson recorded 42 points (19G, 23A) in 86 games in his Stars tenure.

Chiasson spent the next two seasons in Ottawa. After Ottawa, Chiasson spent the following season with the Calgary Flames. After Calgary, Chiasson joined the Washington Capitals where he won the 2018 Stanley Cup. Chiasson recorded 2 points (1G, 1A) in 16 Playoff games for the Capitals.

After winning the Cup in 2018, Chiasson would spend the next three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. Chiasson had a career-high in goals with 22 and points with 38 in the 2018-19 season. After Edmonton, Chiasson played one season with the Vancouver Canucks.

Last season, Chiasson recorded 9 points (3G, 6A) in 20 games with the Detroit Red Wings. This past Summer, Chiasson accepted a PTO with the Boston Bruins, but was released. The 33-year-old remains unsigned.
