Stars Sweep Penguins, the Captain Remains Hot

In the final game of the five-game homestand, the Stars’ captain remained hot by scoring two goals in the second period.

The Dallas Stars defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 at American Airlines Center. With the win, the Stars improved to 43-19-9 and swept the regular season series against the Penguins for the second time in three seasons.

Pittsburgh took the early 1-0 lead 2:45 into the game with a Michael Bunting goal. Joe Pavelski scored his 25th goal of the season to tie the game at one at 7:16 of the first period.

In the second period, the Stars got two goals from captain Jamie Benn in a span of 1:17. Tonight was the third consecutive game in which Benn scored. Benn now has 15 goals on the season.

Sam Steel scored at 4:37 in the third period to extend the Dallas lead to 4-1. After Steel’s goal, Pittsburgh pulled Tristan Jarry as he finished making 16 saves on 20 Dallas shots on goal. Alex Nedeljkovic made three saves in relief.

Rickard Rakell scored to make it 4-2 at 11:03, but no more goals were scored for the night. Jake Oettinger made 20 saves on 22 Pittsburgh shots on goal to win his second straight start. Jason Robertson recorded two assists and Craig Smith has recorded one point in four straight games.

For the Penguins (30-30-9), Evgeni Malkin recorded two assists and Bunting added an assist on with his first period goal.

The Stars will return to action on Sunday night at 7 p.m. CT as they start a four-game road trip at Mullett Arena against the Arizona Coyotes in Tempe, Arizona. On Wednesday night in Dallas, the Stars defeated the Coyotes 5-2. The Stars can sweep the three-game season series against the Coyotes.
