What once looked like an ugly loss in San Jose, would turn into some California love for the Stars.
The Dallas Stars comeback and defeat the San Jose Sharks 7-6 in overtime at SAP Center. With the win, the Stars improved to to 38-17-9.
The first period saw both teams score twice. After falling behind 2-0, Jamie Benn and Logan Stankoven each scored a powerplay goal in 49 seconds to tie the game at two heading into the first intermission. Dallas recorded 20 shots on goal in the first period.
After Wyatt Johnston scored to tie the game at three at 8:48 in the second period, the Sharks scored two goals in 2:02 to take a 5-3 lead into the second intermission. Mikael Grandlund scored at 3:02 in the third period to make the Sharks lead 6-3. Under 10 minutes later, the game turned into Dallas’ way.
Stankoven scored to make it 6-4 with 7:02 remaining in the third period. Johnston scored the next two Dallas goals in 2:11 to tie the game at six. It was Johnston’s first career hat trick. Overtime was needed for the second straight game between the Stars and Sharks. This time, no shootout was needed.
Roope Hintz scored 1:49 into overtime to win the game for the Stars. The Stars swept the home-and-home with the Sharks and have won three consecutive games. Despite allowing six goals on 20 Sharks shots on goal, Jake Oettinger has won three consecutive starts.
Johnston finished with five points (3G, 2A); Stankoven recorded two goals and two assists; Benn recorded three assists after scoring the first goal of the game; Miro Heiskanen recorded four assists.
Defenseman Chris Tanev made his Stars debut since being traded on Feb. 28. Tanev finished with a +1 rating and had a 17:34 TOI.

For the Sharks (15-39-7), Anthony Duclair recorded two goals and two assists; Fabian Zetterlund recorded one goal and two assists; Kaapo Kahkonen made 33 saves on 40 shots on goal by Dallas.
The Stars will continue their California road trip on Friday night at Honda Center against the Anaheim Ducks. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m. CT.
