Stars Fall to Islanders by Horvat’s OT Winner Again

The date was different, but the Stars fall by the same score against the Islanders with the same player scoring in overtime.

The New York Islanders defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 at American Airlines Center in overtime. With the loss, the Stars fell to 35-16-9.

With a back-to-back, Scott Wedgewood got the start in goal for Dallas. Wedgewood started the first Islanders game on Jan. 21 in the 3-2 overtime loss. Wedgewood was tested early by making a breakaway save on Matthew Barzal.

With 4:01 remaining in the first period, Ryan Pulock scored to give the Islanders a 1-0 heading into the first intermission. The first goal scored in the second period saw milestones.

Matt Duchene scored a powerplay goal at 7:11 in the second period to tie the game at one for his 800th career NHL point. On the secondary assist, Logan Stankoven recorded his first NHL point on his 21st birthday and in his second NHL game. Kyle MacLean scored at 15:24 to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead.

With 1:43 remaining in the second period, a moment all Stars players, coaches, front office and fans wanted to see happened. Stankoven scored his first NHL goal to tie the game at two from a pass from Wyatt Johnston.

Per Stars PR: Stankoven became the second player in Dallas Stars history to score his first NHL goal on his birthday. Raymond Sawada became the first player to do it against the Oilers on Feb. 19, 2009.

Stankoven’s family was in attendance.

After a scoreless third period, overtime was needed again for the Stars and Islanders to have a winner. Wedgewood made a big save on Barzal in the final minutes of regulation. Wedgewood made 25 saves.

With 2:06 remaining in overtime, Bo Horvat scored the overtime winner for the Islanders. Horvat scored 41 seconds into overtime in the Jan. 21 meeting against the Stars in New York. The Islanders improved to 24-20-14. Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves.

The Stars will return to action tomorrow night in at Ball Arena against the Colorado Avalanche in a crucial Central Division game. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. CT.

With the point earned in the overtime loss, the Stars remain in first place in the Central Division with 79 points with 60 games played. The Jets are in second place with 77 points with 56 games played. The Avalanche are in third place with 75 points with 59 games played.

The Jets host the Blues tomorrow at 7 p.m. CT. Tomorrow is a busy night for the top three teams in the Central Division.
