Period 1

It’s a tale as old as time, Calgary clashing with Dallas and taking wins back and forth like siblings who hate each other. It’s a new season with some slight changes. We open with Markstrom vs Otter in net. Within the first two minutes, we see a lot of good deflection to regain possession of the puck from Calgary despite the fact we’re living in our zone. Then Connor Zary on his debut night slips one past Otter. With a little under 13 minutes in the clock, we go on the penalty kill. Power Play Unit 1 seems to hold it steady and force the puck away from our end. With 9 seconds left, we go to 4 on 4, and flip to a Stars Power Play. Nothing happens on the man advantage, but not for a lack of trying. The last two minutes are us on the PK, and Wyatt Johnston in the box. Finally, the Captain flies one past Markstrom.

Score: CGY 1 – DAL 1

Goals: Connor Zary with an assist from Yegor Sharangovich, Jamie Benn – shorthanded with an assist from Roope Hintz.

Period 2

We open the second frame with a Calgary Goal. Not ideal, but we hit it back with a Robertson goal and in the second half have a Dadonov goal and the lead. Markstrom is still un-rattled despite all the almost chances flying his way. The tail-end gives us a Marchment goal that sticks, along with assists from his lineys, and we end the period with a shift in energy.

Score: CGY 2 – DAL 4

Goals: Andrew Mangiapane with an assist from Mackenzie Weegar, Jason Robertson with an assist from Roope Hintz, Evgenii Dadonov with an assist from Nils Lundkvist, and Mason Marchment with an assist from Matt Duchene.

Period 3

The last period starts with both teams first lines doing the face-off and then the PK. Otter keeps denying rebounds, and Calgary goes on to score. Within 1 goal to tie, and 5 minutes haven’t fully passed. The last 10 minutes truly make me question what’s really our reason for “holding the line” or “holding even” in the final frame. At this point, I think the Stars are in a very committed relationship with the PK, despite the fact only one goal emerged from this tonight. They pull Markstrom with a minute of playtime left, but we don’t escape our own zone.

We win 4-3, but boy that was rough.

Score: CGY 3 – DAL 4

Goals: Mackenzie Weegar with an assist from Nazem Kadri.
