Yesterday, Stars general manager Jim Nill traded former 2018 first-round pick Ty Dellandrea to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 2025 fourth-round pick. The former 13th overall pick in the draft had his Stars tenure end after four seasons. However, this trade works out not only for Dellandrea, but Dallas moving forward.
In the first two seasons of his career, Dellandrea struggled. After playing 26 games in the 2020-21 season, Dellandrea only played a single game the next season. In the 2022-23 season, Dellandrea got his playing time.
Dellandrea played in all 82 games and recorded 28 points (8G, 19A) to go with it too. The biggest game of Dellandrea’s career came in Game 5 of the 2023 Western Conference Finals against the Golden Knights with the Stars trailing 3-1 in the series. Tied at two in the third period, Dellandrea scored the next two Dallas goals to help the Stars win 4-2 and force a Game 6.
Most people in the Stars expected Dellandrea to take his game to new heights for the 2023-24 season at 23 years old, it didn’t quite happen. This past season, Dellandrea only played in 42 games and recorded 9 points (2G, 7A). His -10 rating was also the lowest on the Stars roster. Also at times, Dellandrea became unplayable with the depth the Stars had.
Dellandrea’s biggest moment this season came in Game 4 of the first round against the Golden Knights when he scored the go-ahead goal in the second period. However, Dellandrea only played in four more Playoff games. His last game with the Stars was Game 5 of the Western Conference Final against the Oilers where he only had 5 minutes of ice time.
With Dellandrea gone, it opens the door next season for Logan Stankoven to play full-time as a Star. Stankoven was tied for sixth with Roope Hintz for the most points during the Playoffs with 8 among the Stars roster. It also could potentially create room for Mavrik Bourque to earn more playing time too. Bourque was the 2023-24 AHL MVP last season.
Dellandrea now gets a fresh start with a new team going to the Sharks. Unfortunately for Dellandrea, the Sharks were the worst team in the NHL last season with 47 points. But, a new team can create new opportunities to expand Dellandrea’s game. The Sharks also need young players to help their roster as the team is in a deep rebuild after the trades the franchise has made over the past few seasons.
Also with Dellandrea gone, some would most likely expect Dallas to re-sign Sam Steel who is a restricted free agent. Steel recorded 24 points (9G, 15A) in 77 games last season, and 5 points (1G, 4A) in the Playoffs. Steel had more Playoff points than Joe Pavelski and Thomas Harley each did.
In his career with Dallas, Dellandrea totaled for 42 points (14G, 28A) in 151 games. In the past, Nill has been able to work his magic with late round picks.
