A new series began for the Western Conference’s top seed and it was the same result to open the series.

The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 in double overtime in Game 1 of the 2024 Western Conference Finals to take a 1-0 series lead. It was the seventh consecutive Game 1 loss for the Stars.

After a scoreless first period, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman scored two goals for the Oilers in the first 4:17 of the second period. Just 1:56 after Hyman’s goal to make it 2-0, Tyler Seguin scored to cut the lead to 2-1 after an Edmonton turnover.

Trailing 2-1 in the third period, Dallas’ offense struggled to generate shots on net against Edmonton goaltender Stuart Skinner. That was until Seguin scored his second goal of the game after a beautiful touch pass by Evgenii Dadonov with 3:23 remaining in the period.

Less than 10 seconds later after Seguin tied the game, Jake Oettinger made a crucial save to keep the score tied on Dylan Holloway. For the fourth time in the Playoffs, overtime was needed for the Stars.

Seventeen seconds into overtime, Connor McDavid was given a double-minor penalty for high-sticking against Matt Duchene. The Stars wouldn’t score on the double-minor as Jason Robertson hit the post twice.

With under 5:30 remaining in overtime, Oettinger made a big stick save on McDavid to keep the score tied. A second overtime was needed.

Dallas won its last game in double overtime against Colorado in Game 6. This time, it wasn’t a happy ending. McDavid scored 32 seconds into double overtime to give the Oilers the win. It was his third goal of the Playoffs.

Game 2 of this series will be on Thursday night in Dallas with puck drop at 7 p.m. CT. If Stars fans want optimism, the Stars lost Game 1 in overtime to the Avalanche at home, but won Game 2 at home last round.
