Stars Collapse in Opening Game of Round Two Against Avalanche

From excitement to an epic collapse is how the Western Conference’s top seed could describe the opening game of the second round.

The Colorado Avalanche complete the three-goal comeback and defeat the Dallas Stars 4-3 in overtime in Game 1 of the 2024 second round at American Airlines Center to take a 1-0 series lead. With the loss, the Stars have lost their last six Game 1s.

The AAC was rocking in the first period after the Stars scored three goals in the first period. Ryan Suter scored the first goal of the game for his first Playoff goal since April 22, 2017. After Suter’s goal, Wyatt Johnston scored his fifth Playoff goal and Jamie Benn added a powerplay goal to give the Stars a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

In the second period, Colorado scored two powerplay goals from Valeri Nichushkin and Cale Makar to cut the Stars lead to 3-2 going into the second intermission. Nichushkin’s goal was his eighth of the Playoffs which is the most among players for the 2024 Playoffs.

Thirty-nine seconds into the third period, Nathan MacKinnon scored to tie the game. After recording 9 shots on goal in the first period, the Stars only recorded 7 for the remaining two periods. Overtime was needed for the second time 2024 Playoffs for the Stars.

After Alexander Georgiev made 6 saves in overtime, Miles Wood scored the overtime winner at 11:03 to complete the Game 1 comeback. In the loss, Jake Oettinger made 22 saves.

Including regular season and tonight, it was the Colorado’s third comeback win in Dallas this season. On Nov. 18, 2023, the Avalanche erased a 3-0 second period deficit to win 6-3. On Jan. 4, 2024, the Avalanche erased a 4-2 third period deficit to win 5-4 in overtime.

Game 2 of the series will be on Thursday night at American Airlines Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. CT.
