There was no love on Broadway for the Stars’ conclusion of a back-to-back tonight.
The New York Rangers defeated the Dallas Stars 3-1 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. With the loss, the Stars fell to 34-14-8.
In the morning, the Stars called Logan Stankoven up to the NHL with the possibility of making his NHL debut. Stars head coach Pete DeBoer labeled Stankoven a game-time decision. With Matt Duchene ready to return to the lineup, Stankoven skated in warmups, but was a healthy scratch. Stankoven was shortly loaned back to the Texas Stars.
Less than eight minutes into the game, Adam Fox scored the first goal of the game for the Rangers. In the second period, each team scored once.
Kaapo Kaako scored at 8:23 of the second period to make it 2-0 Rangers. Playing in his 400th NHL game, Miro Heiskanen scored after missing yesterday’s game to cut the Rangers lead to 2-1. Heiskanen’s goal came 47 seconds later after Kaako’s goal.
Despite the Stars outshooting the Rangers 17-6 in the third period, Igor Shesterkin made all 17 saves. Vincent Trocheck scored the empty-net goal to make it 3-1 at 18:19 to put the game on ice. Shesterkin finished making 41 saves on 42 shots on goal by Dallas.
The Rangers (37-16-3) improved their lead in the Metropolitan Division by six points and have extended their winning streak to eight. Dallas and New York split the season series.
Dallas’ Scott Wedgewood started in goal for the second time against the Rangers. Wedgewood made 23 saves on 25 shots on goal by New York.
