After returning home to Dallas after a three-game road trip, love was in the air for the Stars to prevail against the team in second place in the Metropolitan Division.
With the moms inside the American Airlines Center, the Dallas Stars defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2. With the win, the Stars improved to 33-14-6 and have a 3-1-0 record after the All-Star break.
Prior to the game tonight, the Stars were dealt a loss to the lineup as Evgenii Dadonov will be out 4-6 weeks with a lower-body injury. Without Dadonov, the Stars still were able to score against Carolina’s Pyotr Kochetkov in goal.
Dallas took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission after a Roope Hintz goal. Jordan Staal tied the game 13 seconds into the second period. After Mason Marchment and Jesper Fast traded goals, the teams went into the second intermission tied at two.
At 4:35 into the third period, Jason Robertson scored to give the Stars a 3-2 lead. Protecting a 3-2 lead, Jake Oettinger made a big glove save on Carolina’s Brett Pesce to keep the score 3-2. Oettinger finished with 31 saves.
Matt Duchene scored the empty-net goal to make it 4-2 Stars. After Duchene’s empty netter, Carolina scored, but the goal was waived off after Stars head coach Pete DeBoer challenged the goal. Carolina fell to 30-17-5.
Robertson and Hintz each recorded a goal and an assist. Joe Pavelski and Jani Hakanpää each recorded two assists.
For the Stanley Cup Playoff race, the Stars remain in first place with 72 points and 53 games played now in the Central Division despite the Avalanche defeating the Capitals 6-3 and having 70 points and 54 games played. The Winnipeg Jets were off tonight and host the Sharks tomorrow in Winnipeg with 67 points and having played 50 games..
The Kings were shutout 7-0 against the Sabres in Buffalo; the Blues fell 4-1 against the Maple Leafs in Toronto; the Predators lost 4-2 at home against the Devils after having a 2-1 lead.
The Kings would be the first Wild Card and would play the Stars and the Blues would be the second WIld Card and play the Canucks in the first round of the Playoffs. The Kings have played 50 games and 58 points and the Blues have 52 games played and 58 points. Out of the Playoffs would be the Predators with 53 games played and 56 points. The Flames have played 53 games and have 55 points.
Dallas will take on the Nashville Predators for the final time this season in its next game on Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. Dallas is 1-2-0 this season against Nashville.
