One thing is for certain, the Dallas Stars are Stanley Cup contenders and will be looking to add a piece or more to their roster before the 2024 trade deadline on March 8. However, could it be worth trading away the 13th overall pick from the 2018 NHL Draft?
For 23-year-old Ty Dellandrea, the 2023-24 season has been an underperforming one. In 24 games played out of a possible 53, Dellandrea has recorded one goal, three assists and a -9 rating. Last season, Dellandrea played all 82 games and recorded nine goals, 19 assists and a +9 rating.
Dellandrea started this season recording an assist on opening night on Oct. 12. After game one, Dellandrea didn’t record a point in the next 14 games he played. Dellandrea ended his 14-game pointless streak on Dec. 16 scoring a goal against the Blues.
After Dec. 16, Dellandrea has only played in eight games out of a possible 24. In the eight games played, Dellandrea has recorded two assists.
Dellandrea is a restricted free agent after this season; Dellandrea’s salary this season is $900,000. Stars forward Sam Steel is a restricted free agent after this season at 26 years old and has recorded a better season at a $850,000 salary. Steel has recorded six goals, 10 assists and has a +5 rating.
With the Stars in first place in the Central Division with 72 points and having the third most points in the league, Dellandrea could be a player to watch on the move at the deadline. Last season, the Stars traded Denis Gurianov, the former 12th pick of the 2015 NHL Draft, to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Evgenii Dadonov. Gurianov was 25 years old at the time of the trade.

Gurianov was a restricted free agent after the 2022-23 season, but the Stars still traded him to the Canadiens. Gurianov has played 12 games this season for the Nashville Predators recording one goal, one assist and a +4 rating.
With the trade deadline less than one month away, Dallas could look to add a piece or more to its roster. For teams out of the Playoff race and looking to be sellers, Dellandrea is a name that could be in discussion for Stars general manager Jim Nill to trade away. With Dadonov out for 4-6 weeks with a lower-body injury, the Stars could look to trade for a forward at the deadline.
