No Roope Hintz in the lineup? Not a problem as the Stars win their 2023-24 season opener.

The Dallas Stars defeated the St. Louis Blues 2-1 in a shootout on Thursday night at American Airlines Center in Dallas. With the win, Dallas won its fourth consecutive season opener.

Hintz was ruled out by Stars head coach Pete DeBoer Thursday morning as Hintz is dealing with an upper-body injury. Even without Hintz in the lineup, excitement was inside the AAC.

Near the end of the first period, Mason Marchment deflected a shot in the net, but the goal was waved off for offside. After a scoreless first period, Jamie Benn scored 14 seconds into the second period for a 1-0 Dallas lead. Tyler Tucker responded for the Blues two minutes, 19 seconds later to make it 1-1.

No more goals were scored as the game was highlighted by goaltenders Jake Oettinger and Jordan Binnington. Oettinger stopped 23-of-24 Blues shots; Binnington stopped 33-of-34 Stars shots.

“He’s one of the best goalies when he’s on and he was phenomenal tonight,” Oettinger said on Binnington’s performance.

In overtime, the Stars had a powerplay opportunity with 43 seconds left to win, but did not capitalize which made a shootout determine a winner.

After both teams scored in the first round, Duchene scored which resulted in being the shootout winner in his Stars debut. Duchene changed his mind on his plan for his shootout attempt.

“You kind of expect goalies to pre-skate you a little bit, so you got to mix it up,” Duchene said.

Duchene later added “it’s either really tight games or it’s pond hockey.”

Dallas picked up its fourth consecutive win against the Blues in the regular season as they swept the 2022-23 season series winning all three games against the Blues.

The Stars next game will be on Oct. 17 at T-Mobile Arena as they travel to West to play against the defending Stanley Cup champions Vegas Golden Knights in a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals.
