Entering his second season with the Stars, Dallas needs Mason Marchment to have a better second season.

Nicknamed “Mush,” Dallas signed Marchment on a four-year, $18 million contract on July 13, 2022. Marchment played in 54 games with the President’s Trophy winner Florida Panthers in the 2021-22 season. He recorded 47 points during the 2021-22 season.

With the Stars not re-signing forward Alexander Radulov in the 2022 offseason, some looked at Marchment as Radulov’s replacement.

Marchment got off to a fast start in his first season with Dallas recording 3 goals and 3 assists in the first 4 games of the 2022-23 season. He scored twice on opening night against the Nashville Predators on Oct. 13, 2022. He finished October with 4 goals and 3 assists.

In November, he recorded 3 goals and 3 assists. In December, he recorded 2 goals and 6 assists. Three games in December he recorded 2 points.

However, Marchment hit a goal drought as he scored an empty net goal against the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 13, 2022, and wouldn’t score until March 4, 2023, against the Colorado Avalanche.

Marchment went 32 games without scoring a goal. The last time he scored that wasn’t an empty net goal came on Dec. 4, 2022 against the Minnesota Wild. That would be 37 games without a goal that isn’t an empty netter.

Following the end of his goal drought, Marchment recorded points in the next three games. Marchment recorded no points in Dallas’ win at Seattle on March 13. After that, he missed the next 14 games with a lower-body injury.

Dallas went 9-4-1 without Marchment in the lineup before he returned for the regular season finale against the St. Louis Blues on April 13.

Marchment finished his first season playing 68 games in Dallas and recording 12 goals, 19 assists and -6 rating. Marchment lead the Stars in penalty minutes with 80.

In the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Marchment recorded 3 points (1G-2A) in the first round against the Wild. In Dallas’ series clinching win in game 6 at Minnesota, Marchment scored a goal just before time expired in the second period to make it 3-0 Dallas.

In the second round against the Seattle Kraken, Marchment recorded 3 points (2G-1A) in Dallas’ series win. Against the Golden Knights in the Conference Finals, Marchment recorded no points in the series.

Marchment missed one game in the entire 2023 Playoffs with an upper-body injury. He missed Game 5 vs Seattle.

In the 2023 Playoffs, Marchment finished playing 18 games. He recorded 4 goals, 2 assists and finished with a -8 rating. His -8 rating was tied for second with Tyler Seguin behind Esa Lindell’s -10 rating.

Despite the Stars adding forwards Matt Duchene, Craig Smith and Sam Steel this offseason, Dallas lost forwards this offseason.

Dallas lost Max Domi and Luke Glendening in free agency. Frederick Olofsson was traded to the Avalanche.

With forwards lost, this could be Marchment’s chance to have a big second season with the Stars at 28 years old. Marchment needs 11 points this season for 100 in his career.
